Element related_files is a container for one or more specifications of related_file. Element related_file is devoted to link an external digital object somehow related to the encoded piece but not directly related to the occurrence of music events. In other words, the objects linked within related_files element should not contain contents semantically related to the piece. This definition includes scans of photos, fashion plates, sketches, covers, costumes, etc.; this definition does not include score scans, music performances, audio tracks, etc., which are described in other layers .

  • file_name is the complete path to identify the digital object. The path can be either absolute (e.g. "C:\Documents\images\image1.jpg") or relative (e.g. "images\image1.jpg"), and either local (e.g. "C:\Documents\images\image1.jpg") or remote (e.g. "http://www.unimi.it/image1.jpg"). Attribute file_name should respect the syntax rules supported by different operating systems (including. case sensitivity).
  • file_format, extracted from a complete list of supported formats presented in the IEEE 1599 DTD. IEEE 1599 formats are similar to the corresponding MIME media type, but media type name (e.g. "image") and subtype name (e.g. "jpeg") are separated by an _ (underscore character). As a consequence, a MIME type such as "image/jpeg" is expressed in IEEE 1599 as "image_jpeg".
  • encoding_format (see file_format for allowed values). Usually there is no difference between file and encoding format, but some formats (such as TIFF for graphics and WAV for audio) can be seen as containers of a number of other formats. In this case, file_format reflects the "external" encoding whereas encoding_format specifies the actual encoding within the container.
  • spine_start_ref and spine_end_ref contain the identifiers of music events listed in spine (see below). These attributes allow to synchronize, respectively, the appearance and disappearance of digital objects with the occurrence of music events, and they are useful e.g. for slide show and multimedia presentations purposes.
  • description, which provides an extended text description of the related file.
  • copyright, which contains possible copyright information.
  • notes, which provides an extra text field for detailed description and notes.
